Hasan Mahfuz Journey to Remember: Discovering the Enchanting Beauty of Darjeeling
The date was 12th November 2012, a day that marked the start of an adventure we would remember for a lifetime. Our journey began in Sylhet, as we boarded a bus filled with laughter and lively conversations, most of it coming from parents of school-going students who were traveling with us. The first stretch took us to Dhaka, where we made a brief stop before resuming our journey toward Burimari in Lalmonirhat. From there, we crossed Changrabandha and boarded another bus for the final leg of our trip. The ride stretched on for an exhausting 32 hours as we traveled via Jalpaiguri to Siliguri, yet the excitement of what lay ahead kept us energized. The scenery outside gradually transformed, with the flatlands giving way to hills in the distance, and the conversations inside the bus only added to the warmth of the experience. Finally, when we reached Siliguri, the lively energy of the city helped us shake off the fatigue of the long journey. The busyness of its streets, with their bustling markets and colorful storefronts, offered a refreshing contrast to the stillness of the road we had left behind.
By late afternoon, we decided to hire a taxi from the Siliguri bus stand to take us to Darjeeling. This next stretch of the journey was nothing short of thrilling, as the road wound its way through steep mountain paths, dense forests, and breathtaking landscapes. The three-hour ride to Ghumbanyang felt both exhilarating and surreal, especially as the sun began to set and the temperature dropped dramatically. When we finally arrived at our destination, a quaint and quiet hotel perched 7,009 feet above sea level, night had fallen, and the cold had become bone-chilling. Winter in the hills was fierce, with an icy wind cutting through the air, but there was something magical about it too—it made every moment feel sharper and more alive. After settling into our rooms and warming ourselves with a hot meal, we went to bed early, eager to begin our exploration the next morning.
At four o’clock in the morning, wrapped in as many layers as we could manage, our small group of four friends ventured out into the freezing darkness to discover the beauty of Darjeeling. The cold was intense, biting into our skin, but the excitement of the journey kept us moving. Along the way, we met two other travelers, strangers at first but of our own age. A few shared smiles and conversations later, they became part of our group, and by the end of the trip, they would become close friends. Together, we began exploring the treasures of Darjeeling, a town that seemed to exist on the edge of a dream.
Our first stop was the iconic Darjeeling Mall, where the early morning buzz of life filled the air. From there, we headed to the Batasia Loop, a marvel of engineering where a toy train winds through a spiral of tracks amidst stunning views of the hills. The Japanese Temple offered a moment of peace and reflection, with its serene surroundings and calming atmosphere. At the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, we encountered rare and majestic wildlife native to the Himalayas, including snow leopards and red pandas, while the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute inspired us with tales of daring expeditions to the world's highest peaks.
As the morning gave way to day, we made our way to Tiger Hill, timing our visit perfectly to witness the sunrise. The sight was nothing short of magical—the first rays of sunlight touched the snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga, setting them aglow in hues of gold and pink. It was a moment of pure awe, one that silenced all conversation as we stood there, mesmerized by the grandeur of nature. Next, we visited the Ghoom Monastery, a place of spiritual serenity where ancient chants seemed to echo through the air. The Darjeeling Rock Garden, with its cascading waterfalls and lush greenery, provided a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the simple beauty of nature.
Our journey didn’t end there. We ventured further to Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, where the panoramic views of snow-clad peaks stretched endlessly into the horizon. It felt like standing on the edge of the world, with clouds below us and the mighty Himalayas towering above. Another highlight was Lepchajagat, a tranquil retreat surrounded by dense forests and undisturbed by the chaos of modern life. The beauty of this place was pristine, its silence broken only by the sound of rustling leaves and distant birdsong.
Every step of our journey, every place we visited, seemed to add another layer of meaning to the trip. It wasn’t just the sights that made the experience special—it was the sense of wonder, the shared laughter, the conversations with our new friends, and the quiet moments of reflection that made it unforgettable. Darjeeling, with its majestic natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, had given us far more than we had imagined. It wasn’t just a destination; it was a journey into a world of enchantment, a collection of memories that would stay with us forever.
Thanks & Regards
