An Unplanned Step into China: The Details of a Guangzhou Journey

August 2018. Suddenly, my two friends and I decided to travel to Guangzhou, China. At the time, US-Bangla Airlines was offering an amazing China visa and ticket package for its Sky Star customers. We didn't miss the opportunity. Departing from Dhaka Airport, we landed at Guangzhou's Baiyun International Airport. The first two Chinese words I learned upon arrival—"WC" (washroom) and "Ni Hao" (How are you)—are still etched in my memory.

Guangzhou: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity Located in South China, Guangzhou is a vibrant commercial hub that blends rich tradition with cutting-edge modernity. From electronics, garments, and automobile manufacturing to textiles—numerous industries here not only serve China but export globally. Worried about food? Don’t be. For halal options, you'll find Chinese Muslim, Iranian, Pakistani, Yemeni, Turkish, and Bengali restaurants. Dishes like Chinese goose roast, beef korma, biryani, and Cantonese seafood are easily available. Shopping Paradise: Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Upscale Malls Guangzhou is a shopper’s haven. From trendy clothes and cosmetics to refurbished mobile phones, power banks, and gaming devices—you’ll find it all at unbelievable prices. Many popular brands in Bangladesh source their products from here! Snapshots from the Journey Dafo Temple – A Glimpse into History Dafo Temple, also known as the “Great Buddha Temple,” is one of Guangzhou’s most significant religious sites. With a history of over 1,000 years, it stands among the city's five largest temples. Its highlight is three giant bronze Buddha statues, each about 6 meters tall. The architecture and tranquil surroundings leave visitors deeply moved. Sacred Heart Cathedral – A Symbol of Faith Just 2 kilometers from Dafo Temple lies the Sacred Heart Cathedral—one of Guangzhou’s most iconic landmarks. A Roman Catholic church built entirely of granite, it features stained glass windows depicting biblical stories, creating an atmosphere of quiet reflection. Tourists flock here to take photos or simply to admire the spiritual grandeur. Huacheng Square – The Pulse of Modern Urban Life Huacheng Square is a vast green open space where locals gather to relax and unwind. Located along the Pearl River, the square offers a mesmerizing view of towering structures like Canton Tower, the CTF Finance Centre, and the International Finance Centre. Beneath it lies a massive underground shopping mall—a dreamland for shoppers. In the evening, the square transforms into a fairy-tale city adorned with lights.

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street – Bursting with Life This street is vibrant and full of energy—ideal for budget shopping, street food, and experiencing local culture. Strolling through in the evening feels like walking through a festive fair. The air is filled with the aroma of delicious snacks, and every corner overflows with joy, laughter, and smiling faces. Chimelong Safari Park – A Panda Wonderland A trip to Chimelong Safari Park feels like stepping into nature’s embrace. One of the highlights is riding the slow-moving little train designed for viewing the panda triplets. There are bamboo huts built for them, and during their birthdays, they are treated to cakes made of bamboo and fruit. Their playful antics and innocent charm instantly win the hearts of visitors. Canton Tower and Surroundings – A Radiant Touch of Joy Canton Tower, situated in the heart of Guangzhou, symbolizes the city’s modern spirit. Surrounded by well-planned roads, green spaces, and a sleek metro system, this area is a vibrant hotspot. From late afternoon to night, the place becomes lively with people—some come to hang out, others to take photos or to immerse themselves in the captivating play of lights and shadows. In the evening, the illuminated Canton Tower looks like a dreamy palace, leaving a lasting impression on every visitor’s heart.

Final Thought This trip to Guangzhou was more than just travel—it was an immersive experience of history, culture, natural beauty, and modern sophistication, one that will be cherished for years to come.
